5 out of 5 stars Best TIVO yet and perfect for first time TIVO users   April 5, 2010

I don't often rate and review items I purchase but this new TIVO is worthy of the time.

The new TIVO premiere is a very refined device and what I mean by refined is that even novice users can get it up a running without using much more than the quick start guide.

The new TIVO premiere has super fast menus and integrates all the features of online streaming of shows/movies from Amazon.com and Netflix and Youtube with the shows provided by your cable company.
Our history with TIVO. We first owned a TIVO in 2002 (series 1) and went on to own 2 TIVO's by 2004 (added a series 2). We networked our TIVO so that we could transfer shows between rooms but found them to be a bit unreliable at the advanced features like streaming music. In 2007 we decided to switch to a directtv dvr so that we could record HD shows - we were part of the crowd that was very disappointed that the series 3 HD required cable cards or over the air antennas. In 2009 we got to the point where we disliked directv enough and that their dvr was so useless that we switch to Comcast cable and bought a TIVO. We had the cablecard installed and have never looked back. Our only gripes with the series 3 HD TIVO was the lack of support for 1080i/p and slow speed of the menus.

Moderately Advanced features: We have our HD TIVO and TIVO Premiere on our home network so that we can stream Amazon.com content, Netflix, Youtube, and music from our computer running TIVO Desktop. This setup is simple using the TIVO prompts and even points you to websites to setup or activate access to things like Netflix.

Advanced features: We have a HP Mediasmart server and have already started using the TIVO transfer functionality. The feature is pretty awesome in that we can login to the mediasmart server and a select shows from any of our TIVO's to have transferred. The downside of this feature is that it cannot be initiated from the TIVO itself as an upload. The TIVO does see the mediasmart server and the files that have been transferred to it can be selected for download/streamed back to the TIVO. This makes the mediasmart server an excellent choice for saving content you want long term. We also run an application on our mediasmart server that allows the TIVO to assess the music and photos so that we can stream music and photos without running a computer with the TIVO desktop software.

CONS (if you are really really picky these are likely to be on the list):
Needs a third tuner to allow recording three shows at once
Requires Cablecards (Con if you don't have cable)
Needs a gigabit ethernet adapter

PROS:
Requries Cablecards (is a blessing if you have cable as it removes the need for another box)
Very Fast Menus
Great content
Access to online content through Amazon.com, Netflix, etc. (better interfaces than my other devices that do this: BD player, game system)
Saves me money as Comcast does not charge me for the cablecards but does if I want boxes.

5 out of 5 stars New TiVo Hardware Performs   April 9, 2010

Having used my TiVo Series 3 for about three years, I am ready for new hardware that gives me my TiVo experience. I have learned the hard way that four-year-old PC hardware is asking for trouble and I can't afford to wrestle with cranky hardware for any significant time.

And here, with the Premier XL, we finally have the "TiVo 4" HD DVR with one Terabyte storage; no need to upgrade disks as I had to do with the Series 3. And TiVo Premier also supports THX, which is awesome on a good Sony HDTV.

No front-panel clock and several other "missing" features but the new 1080p output capability and operating speed are refreshing. No problems yet with freezes and crashes and I enjoyed the briefest successful cable-card install in memory (Time Warner). The picture even looks better for some strange reason (perhaps it's the THX video adjustment recording that allowed me to tweak my HDTV).

My earlier experience with Series 3 persuades me that TiVo will regularly improve the software substantially over the next several years but, even now, the Premier XL performance is better than my existing Series 3 TiVo DVR after 3 years of hardware and software upgrades.

Yes, the XL with a lifetime subscription is expensive; but I know of nothing that can match the viewing experience at any price. My choice is either TiVo or No Television because I cannot abide the cable company boxes (I've tried) and cannot enjoy commercial-littered viewing experiences of any kind (books are good). Getting Internet TV shows to my HDTV is too complicated for me to fool with. So, if you have more time than money, perhaps something a bit less expensive may suit you, but TiVo is in a class of its own.

On the other hand, my Series 3 with a 3-year subscription was even more costly in 2007 and I wouldn't trade the last three years of enjoyment for any amount in the same ballpark.

TiVo offers an "upgrade" to Premier for me as an existing Series 3 owner for a substantial discount, but the combination of Amazon multimedia download credits and Amazon Prime shipping eliminates most of that advantage. And buying from Amazon allows me to begin with a lifetime subscription without having to "transfer" my existing (soon expiring) Series 3 subscription to the new TiVo.

5 out of 5 stars HD digital cable box directly replaces cable company box oh-so-well   May 6, 2010

I bought this DVR to be a direct replacement for my cable box, which was a Motorola digital HD DVR, supplied by my cable company, Comcast. My cable box NEVER worked reliably, most days requiring at least one re-start (unplugging the power cord and then plugging it back in). My TiVo Premiere XL DVR, though, has been running flawlessly , non-stop since I installed and configured it. It does require the installation of a "M card" cable card in order to receive digital channels, and this did involve a few hiccups from the cable installers, but once they had a successful "pairing" of the "M card" which is inserted into the back of the machine, it receives all the digital channels in my cable subscription. I don't think you can do things like "On Demand" or "Pay per View," but I never did these on the cable company machine anyway, so this is not a negative for me at all. I certainly could have done the cable card installation myself, with the included step-by-step instructions, but the local cable office wouldn't let me do it for some reason. So, aside from the inconvenience imposed by the cable company for the "M Card" installation, the installation, setup, and functionality of this device is easy and of excellent quality, and I really love the TiVo user interface. This machine really makes my HDTV look fantastic.

I got tired of the high cost of cable and put up a state-of-the-art UHF/VHF antenna. The HD picture is better than cable because it is not compressed. My only problem was without my cable DVR, I had no way to record in HD. After doing some internet research, I decided to buy the TiVo Premiere XL with the lifetime subscription. Now I have high def recordings that are every bit as good as the cable DVR, maybe better, and still no monthly bill! I have more than just Over The Air recording capability. I have music videos from Music Choice, Internet Radio like I had with cable, You Tube on the big screen, slideshows from my computer, and TV schedules two weeks in advance. There are movie rentals and other options I haven't even tried yet. Everything I have tried works. I bought a router and ethernet cable and had no problem setting it up. Two thumbs up, TiVo works great!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't live without it!   July 2, 2010

This was the best decision I have made in quite awhile. In a month's time I already have more than one hundred movies and events recorded. I don't even know how all of the features work yet, but I can say that I couldn't live without my TiVo Premiere XL! Whenever I have a question or problem, I go to TiVo's online chat or customer support 800 number and my issue is quickly resolved. TiVo's so much more than a cable DVR box-it's a way of life.
