It is very important that your audio equipment speakers and your home audio equipment are setup correctly. Because we want to hear movie theater sounds at home, we purchase home theater equipment. It is exciting when we feel the thumps of very low sounds, or when we hear each fragment of glass as it falls after being broken. We can spend a lot of money on an audio system, and if we do not set it up properly, we are wasting hard-earned cash.

You probably bought an audio equipment system with as many features as your budget would allow. But, make no mistake. Just having a lot of features and capabilities in your audio system does not guarantee you anything. You need these features to enjoy your system, but if you take time to understand how to setup your equipment it will enhance your listening experience.

You should be aware there is not just one way to setup an audio system in a room. A room can have unique characteristics of sound because of the way the furniture is placed, or the type of flooring it has. Each of the front three speakers, the main left, the main right and the center channel should all be placed at an equal distance from the main listening position and should be pointed towards the listener. The speakers should also be placed so that they have a slight natural arc. They generally should be placed between 22 – 30 degrees from the main listening position.

4.Surround sound speakers should be placed directly to the left and right or slightly behind the main listening position and should be located about two feet above ear level. A 6.1 system adds a third surround speaker behind the listener. It is important to note that it is best for that speaker not to be directly in line with the center channel. A 7.1 system adds a rear left and a rear right full range surround channel that should be added behind the listening position.

5. From my experience, nothing will add more impact to your movie watching experience then the addition of a quality subwoofer to your setup. Since deep bass is non directional, you can place your subwoofer pretty much anywhere. Many people will place it in the front corner, but some prefer it in the back or hidden along the side. It is important to note that generally bass will be enhanced by being placed next to the wall and even more so if placed in the corner.

These simple tips will get you started towards an enjoyable home theater experience. Every speaker and room have their own unique qualities so use this information as a guide, but experiment further with speaker placement in your own home. Moving a speaker even a few inches can make a dramatic impact on the quality of the sound.

All home entertainment units have three major components that are essential to creating a functional home theater system. The main focus of any theater is the television or video display. Sound quality is essential. A complete sound system is key to providing the soul and voice of the theatre.

A source player is the third element, providing the picture and sound. Cable or satellite TV is standard in most homes but DVD and other players are also added to expand the usefulness of a home theater. It is these three major pieces of electronic innovation that make watching a movie, playing the XBox or listening to a favorite CD enjoyable and worthwhile.

Visual Element

There are video display options available to a home depending on budget and preferences.

Rear Projection Television.

Television technology has been based on the cathode ray tube (CRT) up until the 21st century. In a rear projection TV, there are three tubes, each representing one of the primary colors. This colors mix along with quality wiring and a good screen, provide a very high resolution picture. Manufacturers are starting to drop rear project televisions from their product lines however. Research your manufacturer’s warranty before purchasing a rear projection television to make sure that customer service and repairs will be available down the line.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Television.

An LCD TV can be found as both a rear projection and as a flat screen. LCD rear projection TVs are much more compact than their CRT cousins and use less power. I have written about LCD televisions extensively in other articles so I will forego further explanation here.

Plasma Screen Televisions. In this technology, different gases are trapped between two panes of glass and an electronic signal can modify them to allow them to display a picture. These televisions are produced with a sleek thin design and can produce excellent resolution.

No matter which video display you are leaning toward, make sure to measure the area you want to put the TV so it fits when you bring it home. Also look into whether the screen is able to handle high definition (HD) television and DVDs.

Audio Elements

The sound system is going to make a huge difference in the enjoyment and functionality of your home theater. A good audio system includes the following elements:

Receiver.

This component takes the audio signal, and often the video signal, and distributes it to the proper part of your system.

Amplifier.

This component is what increases the signal strength before it is sent to the speakers. Often times, a purchased receiver will have an amplifier already built into it, making an additional piece of equipment unnecessary.

Surround Sound Speakers.

Standard speaker sets of five are typical for most home theaters. There is a center channel, a right front, right rear, left front and left rear. These different speakers, when properly positioned, make the sound come from the appropriate direction.

A good home theater system can cost anywhere between $1,000 to over $30,000 depending on the quality of the equipment and the size of your home theater design. The difficult economy we are in has most households making tough decisions about what they want and what they can reasonably afford.

Building a family home theater is being put on the back burner in many homes until additional income is available for such “extras.” But a home theater doesn’t have to break the bank. There are resources and ways to keep the cost of a quality system at a reasonable level.

Below are some suggestions for how to save money on a new entertainment system.

1. Search the Web. There are several web sites available online that compare systems and costs. Some will also provide unbiased reviews of products at various price points. Use these to help you decide which brands are in your budget.

2. Install the theater system yourself. Custom installation is needed for some theater designs but many can be easily done yourself with some careful planning. The wiring, cables and connections can be relatively easy to figure out if you follow the instructions.
